The Ringer Reef Story...
Ringer Reef is a winery and vineyard in Porepunkah, North East Victoria, developed by Annie and Bruce Holm. Bruce and Annie always have had a dream to hand craft their own premium wines. In 1996, whilst living in Mildura, Annie and Bruce holidayed in Porepunkah and fell in love with the Alpine Valleys.
Shortly after, they found their 35 hectare property. Bruce had an overwhelming sense of tranquillity and knew that this was the place they would come to live and build a winery. First and foremost it was well suited to quality wine grape growing with deep well drained soils and elevation of 290m - 350m. With an average rainfall of approximately 1100mm and deep soils, grapes could be grown without the need for irrigation. The combination of spectacular views and commercial potential due to a vibrant tourist trade in the region, made this property exactly what they were looking for. The farm was purchased at the end of 1996.
The farm had previously been run as a dairy farm, however it was run down and covered in blackberries, which took 2 years to clear. The first vines were planted in 1998. Since then, they have planted 13 varieties. Cellar door was opened in 2006 and Annie & Bruce worked as a team doing everything from planting vines, picking, bottling, labelling, and running their cellar door.
The property was named ‘Ringer Reef’ by Merry and Hooper who had a gold mine on the property in the early 1890’s. The gold rush played an important role in the Valley’s history, bringing with it not only wealth but also people rich in culture and diversity. Today, the mine lays dormant and provides crystal clear water supply to the property.
With 10 acres under vine, the rows laid beautifully out across the hillside, the views are simply breathtaking. The front gate is conveniently situated on the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, which makes a lovely cruise by bike along the Rail Trail from Bright, Ringer Reef being one of two cellar doors to visit in Porepunkah.
With the Ovens River only minutes from the winery, it makes for a glorious spot to pick up some goodies from cellar door and take to the water’s edge in the warmer months. Or from 12pm – 5pm daily you can sit on the terrace at the cellar door and soak in the views and watch the world go by. There is a large lawn area for picnic style gatherings, or for the kids to run around and play games.
In December 2016, Annie and Bruce's son Mark and his wife Julie joined the team at Ringer Reef.
Annie and Bruce, together with Mark and Julie look forward to welcoming you to their little slice of heaven, and sharing their passion for what they do and for their region.
